Marcia Tucker
Marcia Tucker founded the New Museum of Contemporary Art in 1977 and was its Director until 1999. Exhibitions she curated at the New Museum included ‘Bad’ Painting (1978), Choices: Making an Art of Everyday Life (1986), Pat Steir (1987), Markus Raetz (1988), Bad Girls (1994), and A Labor of Love (1996). She was U.S. Commissioner for Paradise Lost/Paradise Regained: American Visions of the New Decade at the 41st Venice Biennale (1984). From 1969 to 1977 she was curator of painting and sculpture at the Whitney Museum of American Art, where she organized exhibitions of Bruce Nauman, Richard Tuttle, Joan Mitchell, Robert Morris, and Lee Krasner, among others. She held honorary doctoral degrees from the San Francisco Art Institute and Atlanta College of Art and in 1997 was named a Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture.
