Collection Summary

Jo Spence (1934-1992) was a British photographer, writer, and cultural worker. The Jo Spence Archives includes a broad range of photographic materials and scrapbooks documenting the development of many of Spence’s key works including Cinderella, Hackney Flashers (1974-79), Facing Up to Myself (1977), The History Lesson (1981), Nottingham Cancer Project (1983), and her degree show at the Polytechnic College London (1982). The collection also includes key collaborative works with Terry Dennett including The Crisis Project, Beyond the Family Album, and Remodeling Medical History (1985-88). The collection also includes Spence’s published writings for Spare Rib and British photography magazines.
